Investigate greeting card messages and/or titles of articles in magazines or websites addressed to people aged 40 and over (this can be done over the Internet). Analyze 8-12 greeting card messages and/or 5-10 titles of articles, making note of the content and attitude toward aging. Develop a list of characteristics of people in midlife or in a midlife crisis as promoted by the greeting cards or the media. What types of stereotypes of individuals in midlife do the greeting cards or media promote? Do you (if you are in this age-group), your parents, or other people you know actually show any of these characteristics? Are media portrayals fairly accurate or inaccurate? What characteristics (if any) are typical of individuals in midlife? Compare what you find in the greeting cards and/or articles to the theories presented in your textbook.
