M6 Lab IV: Blood Typing
Please read through the laboratory exercise and follow the directions. It is often helpful to look over the entire lab first before you begin.

You will be entering your answers to the lab questions in the separate laboratory report (attached).  When you complete your laboratory report, submit it here.

Virtual laboratory:  Blood typing and transfusion

Blood plays an important role in homeostasis. Blood loss can result in decreased perfusion of organs, and ultimately shock if not treated.  If our blood lacked the ability to rejuvenate and renew, oxygen and nutrient transport, pH maintenance and coagulation would be compromised.  This laboratory experiment will allow you to see how blood groups are determined and how blood typing is critical to blood transfusion.  Before you begin the laboratory exercise, review this tutorial (new window) about the game and review the sections on blood typing and transfusion in your book.

As you begin this laboratory exercise you will be met with a challenge of typing the blood of three patients injured in an auto accident and choosing the blood for a blood transfusion.  Read the procedures and questions below and then go to the website to complete the lab. http://www.nobelprize.org/educational/medicine/bloodtypinggame/game/index.html_(new window)

Procedure:

Follow the arrow to proceed to meet the patients.  Over the course of this experiment you will have a total of three patients.  These patients are randomly generated so it is possible that you may have patients with the same blood types.  It is your responsibility to describe what you see for each patient in the questions that follow.
Choose one of the patients and follow the directions on the screen for blood typing.  This requires that you draw blood out into a syringe, and then dispense it into the tubes that appear on the screen and draw conclusions about the patients blood type by choosing the type in the drop above the test tubes.  When you are bloody  correct, x out of the area and it will take you on through to the next step.  Keep track of your results in the Lab Report.
Next follow through with the blood transfusion part of the experiment.
Keep in mind that you will be recording results and answering questions in the lab report.  Your report will be entered in the lab report link in Laboratory Content and Activities
