In Christianity, the imago Dei is a concept that humans were created in the image of God (White, 2020). God created man in his image to have morality, spirituality, and carry his love for the humankind. Humans were to multiply and fill the earth following gods example by acting as a steward for the earth cultivating and sustaining it, (Ross, M. (2020)).
Christians believe to be created in the image of God means they must look to God for meaning purpose and direction and reflect the attributes of their creator. Recognizing the Imago Die in each human being indicates there is a special place in God’s plan for each of us. The fact that each human being is created in the image of God means they will be bestowed with dignity and honor, (Shelly, J. A., Miller A. B. (2006)). This belief has huge implications for the care that we deliver to patients. It is the belief that each patient is created in God’s image is worthy of dignity compassion and caring regardless of that race, gender, religion or socioeconomic status. It has been the Imago Dei that has motivated Christians throughout the centuries and in turn motivated nurses to care for the poor sick and disenfranchised. In healthcare we encounter individuals from all backgrounds. As a nurse it is important for me to be aware of implicit bias. I am always reminded of my moral responsibility when caring for patients. Having conversations and understanding my patients physical, emotional, and spiritual needs helps guide me to provide the best care I can.
