In the world today 75% of our food comes from only twelve (12) plant species. Yet Jamaican farmers onsmall plots of land grow up to eighty-seven (87) species of food plants. Do people on the island of Jamaica have a better idea? Should we start placing a higher value on Agrobiodiversity (more crop species) than on a few plant species that may produce higher yields per plant? Think long-term. And think in terms of small-scale farms. Is biodiversity more important over time than a potentially higher yield per harvest?
