This case is taken from Hill, Just Business, pp. 116-118.
Sovanny, a college student majoring in biology, works part time as a waitress for the Eager Eagle Restaurant. One evening an eight-month pregnant customer orders a double whisky before her meal. The following conversation occurs:
Sovanny: Oh, I don’t think you want to do that. I just studied the serious harm that alcohol can cause to babies. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a serious problem.
Customer: Hey, this is my baby, not yours. Besides, you job is to serve me. Now get me my drink.
Sovanny: Just a minute, please.
Sovanny finds her manager, Bob, and expresses her concerns. After Bob discussion the matter directly with the customer, he orders Sovanny to deliver the drink. She refuses and is fired.
Has Sovanny acted correctly? What, if anything, would you have done differently?
What moral guidance do the concepts of this chapter (Chapter 7) provide in this case?
As you reflect on your past experience(s) with agency relationships, what conclusions can you draw?
After reading the Hill text this week and exploring the topic of agency, what have you learned?
Describe at least one specific way in which you can apply what you have learned about agency.
