1. Select a “modern myth” – this can be a movie, movie series, television series, comic book, graphic novel or book. Some suggestions: Superman (comic book or movie(s), The Lord of the Rings (books or movies), The Matrix, The Wizard of Oz (book or movie), Lost (TV series), or whatever might be interesting to you.
2. Analyze either the plot or one or more of the major characters: how do they compare to the mythological archetypes of deities or heroes, or how does the story reflect mythological patterns of creation, catastrophe or the hero’s journey?
Your paper should have a thesis – a statement of interpretation, such as “Frodo’s journey is an exact replica of Aeneas’s journey”.
Your paper should then focus on using information about both the ancient and modern myth to prove your thesis is correct. You should seek out information about your selected topic from sources other than the book or movie itself. Encyclopedias and reference works on mythology are acceptable sources, as long as the article has a named author. For example, Encyclopedia Mythica is an acceptable web source, because the articles there have authors; Wikipedia is not an acceptable source because the articles there are anonymous. If you have trouble finding resources, let me know – there are lots out there! You should cite the sources of any quotes or information used in your essay. Use MLA format for your notes and your Works Cited page. If you have any questions about your sources, ask me before you submit the essay.
4. Your paper will be graded on the clarity of your thesis, the support you provide for your thesis, the quality of the information presented and its organization, and your use of source material. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax will be graded.
